At Husk & Seed Skincare It’s important to us that our customers understand the ingredients that we use to formulate our skincare products and the reasons why we have chosen them.  Each one has multiple benefits and you won’t find anything in our bottles & jars that doesn’t contribute to healthier skin!  I thought today I would shine the light on one of my favourite carrier oils to use – pomegranate seed oil.  This beautiful juicy, scarlet fruit is jam-packed with so many nutrients for skin & body, that we’d be crazy not to include it in our capsule collection!   You can find this high performing oil in abundance in both of our nourishing facial oils -  Vitamin-Rich Botanical Day Oil and Overnight Replenishing Oil.

Pomegranate oil derives from the fruit seeds, which are dried before being cold-pressed.  We always choose cold-pressed or unrefined oils because this method retains the highest level of valuable photoactive compounds. Refined oils are processed, which can include bleaching and deodorising, which further removes the beneficial nutrients.

Key Nutrients:

Vitamin K is a potent antioxidant, which helps protect skin from the harmful effects of free radicals caused by exposure to smoke, pollution and sun rays. It’s also great at wound healing and soothing inflammatory skin conditions. Pomegranate seed oil is also high in Vitamins A & C!

Punicic acid (omega 5) has several effects that are beneficial for the skin. It restricts trans-epidermal water loss, so it protects skin against dryness and flaking. It also accelerates regenerative processes by intensifying the skin’s production of proteins and barrier lipids.

Polyphenols are compounds naturally found in plants that offer protective qualities. They neutralise free radicals from the environment before they can cause damage in skin cells.  Pomegranate oil is so rich in polyphenols that it can screen or absorb ultraviolet light, protecting the skin from UV damage (we are not suggesting you use this instead of an SPF, but it’s good to know it offers some protection!)

As well as being amazing when applied to your skin, it’s also delicious to eat!  I like adding pomegranate seeds to salad to get their superfood benefits of antioxidants, potassium and vitamins. Or try drinking some pomegranate juice to feed your skin and promote a natural glow!
